The EAR 868 is a high-performance tube preamplifier designed by Tim de Paravicini under Esoteric Audio Research (EAR). Drawing inspiration from the flagship EAR 912, the 868 offers a more compact form factor without compromising on sound quality. It features a fully balanced, transformer-coupled design, providing both balanced and unbalanced connections at input and output.
The 868 is available in two versions:
EAR 868L: Line-stage only, utilizing two PCC88 (7DJ8) tubes.
EAR 868PL: Includes a built-in phono stage with support for both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges.
The preamplifier boasts five analog RCA inputs, one balanced XLR input, and a phono input (in the 868PL version). It also offers two line outputs (RCA), two balanced outputs (XLR), and a tape monitor output. The unit is equipped with a built-in power supply, eliminating the need for an external power brick, and is designed to minimize hum and noise.
Crafted with precision, the 868 features a 10mm thick CNC-milled chrome fascia and is hand-finished to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal. The transformers are hand-wound to exacting specifications, contributing to the preamplifier's exceptional sound quality.
